Free ways to automate before you pay anyone
Most “free Zapier alternative” lists are published by companies selling an alternative. This one starts with the option that involves buying nothing and earns us nothing, because for a large share of the jobs people automate, it is the right answer.

By the shape of the answer — no tool, then self-hosted, then hosted free tiers. Not by what we could earn. There are no rankings and no “best overall”, because four tools is not enough evidence for a category verdict.
We built and ran the same workflow on Make, n8n Cloud and Pabbly on 2026-09-22. We have not run Zapier, so nothing here claims to have tested it.
1. The tool you may not need
Before comparing platforms, check whether the two products already talk to each other. A connector you do not need is the cheapest connector there is.
DocumentedGoogle Forms writes responses straight to Google Sheets with no automation tool in the middle. This is the single most common job we see described as needing automation, and it does not. (Google Workspace help, accessed 2026-09-22)

2. Self-hosted: free in money, not free in effort

We have never run the self-hosted edition. We tested n8n Cloud, not Community. Everything above is the vendor’s documentation, and the running cost — updates, backups, uptime, security — is your time rather than a bill. That trade is excellent for someone who already runs a server and poor for someone who does not.
3. Hosted free tiers
All three of these we built the same workflow on. The relevant question is not which number is biggest — the units are different and do not convert — but how each free tier is consumed by the shape of your work.

Credits, executions and tasks are different units. Do not compare the numbers in the free tier column to each other.
What a free tier actually costs you
We tested itA free tier is consumed by failure as well as success. One deliberately broken 10-line order consumed 21 of our 100 free monthly Pabbly tasks in about ten minutes, because automatic re-execution is on by default and retried it for us.
We tested itOn Make, a configuration error that never left the platform still cost 4 credits. Free allowances are spent by things that never produced a result.
Why Zapier has no numbers here
We have not run Zapier. Publishing its free-tier limits from memory or from another blog would be exactly the behaviour this site exists to avoid, so this page carries no tested figures for it. Its own pricing page is the authority.

When paying starts to make sense
- The job runs often enough that doing it by hand has a real weekly cost.
- A failure has a consequence — a missed order, a customer who never hears back.
- The two products genuinely have no native path between them.
- You need someone else to keep the thing running.
- A native integration already exists and you have not checked.
- The task happens a few times a month.
- The process still changes every few weeks — you would be automating a moving target.
- Nobody would notice for a week if it stopped. Then a spot-check is enough.
Limitations and failure cases
- Free-tier terms change often and without notice. Every figure here carries the date we checked it.
- We tested three platforms on one workflow on one day. That is not a survey of the market.
- We have not run Zapier, and we have not run n8n self-hosted.
- Tools we have not tested are described from their own documentation and labelled as such. None of them is presented as measured.
